Illustration: Polar explorer and balloonist Salomon André

A digital illustration inspired by the adventurous but also tragic story of Swedish engineer André Salomon.

He was a dreamer and an adventurer at the same time. In 1896, he set out to conquer the North Pole, but in his own way – in a hot air balloon!

And what the hell: the engineer-physicist underestimated Physics. More here

His balloon got wet in the extreme northern temperatures and immediately froze. And it got heavier by itself.

And then it's just sad: The balloon, covered in an ice crust, crashed, and Andreé found himself in the middle of white nothingness, far from civilization and the North Pole.

And his body was found by other (hiking) adventurers only after 30 years.
